D&C's have kind of lost favor in the past few years, because they are a "blind" procedure, where a small, metal device about as big around as a #2 pencil, is inserted into the uterus and used to scrape the uterine lining. We can't see up in there when we are doing the procedure, so we have to hope that the polyp and any abnormal tissue is removed. A hysteroscopy, on the other hand, is a procedure using a small, lighted tube with a camera attached that allows us to directly look inside the uterus and remove any abnormal areas (including polyps). The recovery time for both procedures is minimal, as you go home the same day. The overwhelming majority of my patients are back at work 2 days after the procedure. You can expect some light spotting for a few days to a week. Rarely, an infection occurs requiring oral or IV antibiotics. This is usually diagnosed when the patient has abdominal pain and increased bleeding. Good luck with your procedure. Hysteroscopic polypectomy is usually curative.
