progesterone and miscarriageFrom: Anne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 1 Apr 1998 21:58:26 -0600 (CST)
I am a gravida 8 (!) who has had three miscarriages and one loss to anencephaly. I had a miscarriage Feb. 3 and conceived again later that month. My progesterone levels were monitored this time and went from 14 at 4 weeks, to 15 at 5 weeks, back to 14 at 6 weeks. I was started on 200mg. progesterone suppositories twice a day. My question is: is there a risk of carrying a baby to term that otherwise would be miscarrying due to abnormalities? Have there been any studies on this subject? I understand that miscarriage is sometimes a mercy for a baby who has a fatal defect - I don't want to override this natural process if it is occurring. On the other hand, if this could be a healthy baby I would like to do anything reasonable to protect it. Please advise. Anne
