Pregnancy, acne and medications?From: Holly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 31 Mar 1998 10:47:20 -0600 (CST)
I had a bad experience with acne during my last (and first) pregnancy. The acne was moderate throughout the pregnancy and seemed to get progressively worse towards the end. Then after the baby was born (6 months ago), I had a horrible severe cystic acne outbreak - the kind that is depicted in the Accutane brochure. I almost resorted to Accutane but thankfully, I did not have to. I have been undergoing treatment for the last 6 months and finally I am totally clear again. To achieve this, I am using minocycline and Ortho tri-cyclen oral medications and Sulfacet-R and Benzamycin topicals. This regimen has worked wonders for me and I thank God every day that I am getting back to normal. However, I want to get pregnant again in about a year or so. (I will be off the medications by then). But I am SCARED to death that the same thing will happen to me because it was such a horrible experience. But if it does happen this time, I want to be more prepared, hence my questions below: 1) Are there any topical medications that are proven to be safe to use during pregnancy? 2) How soon after birth is it safe to use minocycline? 3) How soon after birth is it safe to use Ortho tri-cyclen birth control pills? Is there a reason, such as fear of post-partum hemorrhage, that people usually don't go back on these for 6 weeks? Thank you for any information you can provide.
