The most common reason for recurrence of a Bartholin gland abscess is obstruction of the Bartholin gland duct - an outflow obstruction which, if allowed to continue, allows production of bacteria in a closed space, thereby creating an abscess. There are no "outside" causes noted in the literature.

If the gland must be removed, resolution of the recurrent infection should be expected - nothing more or less.
