Sandra,

If you think of labor as a marathon (of sorts), and your uterus as a muscle (which it is), then you'll understand that the uterine muscle cannot effectively get through the marathon without being in shape. The muscle tones itself up before it needs to do its real work: Braxton-Hicks contractions are warm-ups. It's a great design, if annoying sometimes!

I believe most women start getting them after 28 weeks (I got them as early as 24, but this was because I wasn't drinking enough water). At first they're sporadic, and then they get more regular, and toward the very end almost anything can bring them on - standing up, for example, or rolling over in bed, or being jostled. They're normal. They may feel uncomfortable, but they're normal. If you think you're having too many of them and you're not due yet, don't hesitate to call your doctor at any hour of the day or night (and don't think you'll bother him/her either - people who deliver babies for a living don't expect to have 9-5 hours, and can put your concerns to rest).

Congratulations on your coming baby!
