Dear Amy,

Perhaps if I had been raised to believe that birth was normal and not to be feared, I might have gone into my situation without fear, and not have had an epidural... I fully agree that education is the key to the Fear Factor in child-birth. I was Very fortunate to have been blessed with a mother (5 children) that brought me and my sisters up to recognize bith as a Natural Process and that the only thing to fear was being frighted of what would happen, how much pain will I have, would it be terrible, ect. I had four children All Natural, no pain meds, no anesthesia, no epidurals, (they had not been invented yet). I had fairly easy, but not pain free, labors and fairly quick deliveries. My two daughters have both delivered in birthing rooms and had similar experiences as me. So, I do agree that what we are brought up to believe the birthing process will be like, is most likely what we will experience. I also agree that if society tells us something is painful or un-bearable in a lot of cases it will be ... I had a friend that had her teeth scaled a few years ago and her discription of the procedure was Horrible. Great Pain during and after. I had the same procedure yesterday and I slept through it! What does this mean to me now? Perhaps it was horrible for her but; I caused myself to anticipate pain Before I even sat in the chair and after a few minutes I found out it wasn't going to be that way for Me! I could have saved myself a lot of pre-procedure worry if I hadn't heard her story or better yet Expected it to be the same for Me! So how do we educate women and help them to have a positive approach towards childbirth? Maybe us older gals have to speak up once in a while and give these new Moms to be a little support and explain about Not listening to "Old Wives Tales"! Epidurals have been a wonderful thing for those that want them and need them, but; fear of un-bearable pain, that you havn't even had yet; is not the reason to get one. IMHO Barbara
