I'd love to know more about the herbal medication. That's how I pick up new thoughts and ideas.

No blood is gathering to attack you at a later time. The cramps and pain are the direct response to prostaglandin release secondary to cell death and tissue separation which occurs with the period normally. This chemical does not dissipate immediately after bleeding stops in all people. Most, yes but not all. NSAIDs are anti-prostaglandin agents and cn be very helpful in these instances.
