Yes. Any cervical inflammation or irritation can cause an abnormal reading of a Pap smear. However, most of the time this results in a reading of "inflammation" or, at most, "mild atypia." It is very unlikely that an infection will lead to a very abnormal reading, such as "severe atypia."

In any event, because infection can sometimes make it difficult to see a big problem that exists beneath the infection, most gyn's repeat Pap smears that show significant infection (after treating the infection, of course).
