Hi Mary!

I'm not a doctor, but thought I'd take a stab at this in case our esteemed physicians get tied up for awhile! :-)

At your first appointment, you physician will take a history from you (length and detail dependent on how often you've already been there and what he already knows!) and will calculate your "official" due date based on the dates you give him. He/she will also most likely give you some reading material pertaining to pregnancy. May or may not due a urine pregnancy test in the office to confirm what you already know.

Then, you'll have a pelvic exam where the uterus, etc., will be checked to make sure everything is going according to plan at this point. I also had a Pap smear done at this visit, but I don't know if that's standard or not. You may also be given a slip for the lab to have all the initial blood work done too.

It sounds long and involved, but it's all necessary. And it means all the rest of your visits will be much quicker (external exams, listening to the heartbeat which is the absolute BEST part of every visit!).

Best wishes to you. Enjoy every minute! These nine months will fly by (try to keep telling yourself that when you're 8 months along!) and soon you'll have your little one in your arms!
