HRT first pass syndromeFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netThu, 30 Oct 1997 12:58:57 -0600
Hello. I stumbled upon this e-mail address under the subject of HRT/first-pass-syndrome. I am an almost 42 yr old woman who had a complete hysterectomy two years ago. I cannot tolerate oral estrogen, presumably because of the firs-pass phenomenon. I cannot tolerate any kind of progesterone. Using the patch, I feel absolutely fabulous about 30% of the time; I feel O.K. about 30% of the time, and I feel uterly misterable the remainder of the time. Right now I'm wearing about 2-1/2 patches. Sometimes I need 1 to 1-1/2 patches to feel normal. Sometimes that number is insufficient. Sx include irritablility at times, with great relief resulting from adding more patch(es). At other times, I feel intermittant tension in the throat area (around the thyroid?), which will also disappear when the patch amount is right. Incidentally, blood thyroid levels always show normal, whereas my body temp. is always low. I will be seeing my M.D. soon to discuss the possibility of using estrogen injections (though she has expressed reluctance previously due to the up and down experience many woman have related to the wearing off over time). The hysterectomy was supposed to be the answer to all my problems. I have to hope that this will all work out eventually. Do you have any ideas? Suggestions? (I know that sometimes when I discuss this situation, people have acted as if this is all in my head, or emotional in origin. I'm willing to look at any possibility, and have been doing therapy for 6 months to see what comes up. Nothing seems related, but I'm staying longer to keep working on myself. I have an otherwise stable life. I'm a massage therapist; married to a wonderful D.D.S. for almost 16 years; have a great 10 year old daughter, am a girl scout leader, etc. etc. etc.) Any info you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Marvel E. Galvin
