Perimenopause is tghe period around the menopause in which marked menstrual cucle disturbances occur, usually accompanied by hot flushes. Perimenopause starts with the irregularity of the menstrual cycle due to the ageing process in the ovary and ends by definition 12 months after the last menstruation (the menopause). The mean duration of the period from the beginning of the perimenopause until menopause is about 4 years with a large variation of 0 to 9-10 years.
