It doesn't seem quite fair, does it, to be evaluated for one problem and
then find something completly unexpected.

Unless they find something a lot worse on the full D&C, a hysterectomy
is highly UNLIKELY. You may need progestin therapy(provera or another
one called megace) for about 6 months. Then a repeat D&C to make sure
the progestins worked.
