HCG not zero 3 months post D&C?From: A. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 20 Aug 1997 10:23:59 -0500 (CDT)
I had a missed miscarriage at 9 weeks LMP in early May. I had a D&C performed. I never had any blood work done before or after the pregnancy except a non-quantitative test to confirm the pregnancy at 5 weeks. My first period after the D&C came at 27 days, the second 35 days and the last one 36 days. Usual for me is 29-30 days. I was so late this last time that I had a non-quantitative HCG blood test done. The lab reported that the result was "borderline" - not negative and not positive. They could not tell me what the cut-off was between positive and negative. A nurse I spoke with said that for quantitative HCG tests the cut-off is 2.5. I should add that home HPT's that are supposed to be sensitive to 25 units of HCG were negative. I was going to wait a couple of days and have a quantitative HCG drawn but while waiting, my period came. My question is why the level of HCG is not zero after 3 months? At my follow-up visit 2 weeks after the D&C, my ob/gyn said there was no evidence that there was a molar pregnancy (they did pathology work I believe). They don't routinely check HCG after a D&C. My other question is whether having an elevated HCG level (whatever it is) could be causing my periods to be longer (and much heavier) than normal. Any help is appreciated.
