Breastfeeding and PMS?

I have been breastfeeding my firstborn for nine months. She is beginning to taper off in her feedings due to more table food and liquids, and now she only nurses 4-6 times a day/night. I understand that the return of my period is due.

The problems that I have been experiencing for the past few weeks resemble those I experienced premenstrually before I was pregnant. I have a particularly bad time of it premenstrually and have learned how to control the bad symptoms with diet, exercise, herbs, etc.

My problems currently, however, seem to be much worse. I have been extremely depressed. I also have insomnia, loss of appetite, back pain, edema, headache, well.... you name it--it seems that I have it.

My period has not returned. Exercise and diet seem to help, but not like before. I am a stay-at-home mother which is new for me. I am wondering if stress and lack of sleep (my baby wakes 2-3 times a night) is now the new cause of these exacerbated symptoms.

I am also wondering if things will be better once my period returns and I go through a regular cycle a few times.

I have searched through many sources and found no answers to this particular problem. I checked some books out of the library yesterday dealing with acupuncture, massage and aromatherapy thinking that may help.

Maybe alternative medicine is the way to go since I see absolutely no literature on this anywhere.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
