No periods and ovarian cysts

Two years ago at 36 I had my 2nd child and a tubal. It then took 5 months to get my period, which resumed for 6. Then stopped for 3 and resumed for 5. No period for 4 so I went to doctor. Provera for 10 days triggered it the first time but no more (tried 2 more times). Four more months without it. Prolactin was elevated on first visit but now normal. Thyroid okay, estrogen okay (checked for early menopause). Referred to a GYN and had pelvic then vaginal ultrasounds. Three obvious cysts on one ovary and one small on other. No obvious pain. Considerable weight gain with the pregnancies (still carrying excess weight). From searching this forum, I understand this all to be fairly common. My concern is that I had a first cousin my age (35 at the time) who died within 2 weeks of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Our grandfather died of colon cancer. Other than that, common relatives basically have diabetes, obesity, and heart problems (no other known cancers). The GYN nurse said the doctor will probably propose depo-provera shots (I'm waiting for doctor to get back in town). I am just looking for opinions on whether normal, non-invasive treatments are the way to go or should something more aggressive be considered because of family history and the fact that I have had a tubal. Thanks for your time!
