Re: General sex-relatedFrom: D. Ashley Hill, M.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 31 May 1997 08:47:25 -0500 (CDT)
I want to know if it is >>>normal after intercourse (w/o barriers) for semen and vaginal secretions >>>to just run out. Sure. The normal axis of the vagina when standing is horizontal, and even when lying down there is a slight tilt to the vagina. This becomes quite clear when examining patients who have genital warts (condylomata). Many of these women have warts in a line extending from the vaginal opening to the anus, yet most deny having anal intercourse. It seems to me that the vaginal secretions/semen "run down" over this area, causing the warts to appear. Finally, the old "who is going to sleep in the wet spot" joke implies that secretions are leaking out during and after intercourse. These types of questions are sometimes hard to ask, but, as health care providers, we get them all the time. A good rule of thumb when talking to your doctor or other health care professional is that the only "bad" question is the one you don't ask! Take care, Ashley
