HRT progesterone dosageFrom: Linda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 29 May 1997 00:00:06 -0500 (CDT)
I am a 54-year-old postmenopausal woman in good health with uterus intact. I have been on HRT since age 46 at the onset of menopausal "symptoms." At my last annual checkup six months ago, my doctor changed my progesterone dosage from a 2-week periodic regimen to a continuous (daily) one with a lower dose (2.5 mg). Prior to the change in dosage, I had regular, chemically-induced periods. Now, I have no "periods" at all. My question is this: Is the uterine lining that is built up by the estrogen I take daily (Estrace 1 mg) not to be shed as before? I thought that it was important to take progesterone so that the lining would be shed periodically. I understand that the low dose I now take is not enough to cause shedding of the lining. Is the estrogen, then, being properly "opposed"? I have another, related question. Is it "okay" for my breasts to be slightly swollen and tender all of the time, as they are on this new regimen, rather than "rising and falling" as they used to on the 2-week-on and 2-week-off schedule of progesterone? Thank you,
