Dr. Hill, Thank you for your very informative article titled "Understanding Miscarriage". As a woman who has experienced three pregnancy losses (2nd trimester GT, 1st trimester miscarriage and a neonatal death at 28+ weeks), I found your article to be very informative and reassuring. Personally, I think every woman who becomes pregnant should be aware of what potentially could happen, not to frighten her, but to arm her with the knowledge to make informed choices at the critical time. Learning that a baby that you wanted and dreamed about either has died or is dying puts you into such an indescribable mental and emotional place, that rational thought and decision making abilities are not easily grasped. I have unfortunately had experiences with medical professionals who didn't exactly provide the big picture or all the pertinent details. Part of that was my fault for not knowing what to ask. Live and learn, right?

One area that was not discussed was what to do when a woman begins to miscarry - before she gets to see her doctor or arrives at the hospital. Should the products of pregnancy be collected for examination? If so, in what type of container and stored how until being examined? I ask this based on my personal experience of having not been told to do so by an advise nurse (at a MAJOR western HMO) and then reprimanded by the nurse at the hospital for not "saving anything".

My husband and I are attempting our 5th pregnancy - hoping to give our son a little brother or sister. We're keeping our fingers crossed that this time it will be smooth-sailing!
