Evelyn,

Endometriosis is the presence of something completly normal (the endometrium) in an anormal place. If the location is inside the uterine muscle it is adenomyosis, if it is outside the uterus it is endometriosis. Like normal endometriosis this tissue reacts to hormonal changes. Endometriosis is supposed to disappear with the onset of menopausis. This queer disease is benign and mainly responsible for pain and heavy menses. It can also be responsible for infertility. The most effective treatment seems to be GnRH agonists. These drugs cause a therapeutic and reversible menopausis and mus last for 3 months at least. Hysterectomy is an extremist treatment.
