D&C

To Whom It Concerns: I'm not sure this is the correct place to e-mail this message. Hopefully, it is.

I am an emergency room nurse with an unusual problem. I suffered a misscarriage last June and subsequently had a D&C. My insurance company has denied this procedure because they state they do not cover elective abortions.I am a military dependent and received my ob services through a civilian provider. The Fiscal Intermediary, Unisys, is the party denying not only my claim but everyone elses in this region. They continue to deny our claims even at a medical review level with all pertinent documentation at hand ie, progress notes, nurses notes, ultrsound reports, op reports, and pathology reports. This has affected the moral of many military families not to mention the fact that we can't complete our grieving. I continue to be informed by this company that I was not in a life threatening condition, did not qualify for an elective abortion and by the way, here are a list of diagnosis that are approved for elective abortions.

Can you imagine continually receiving this type of information when you have suffered such a loss? I even wrote a passionate letter in an attempt to convince them that this was a planned pregancy and we suffered a great loss.

A couple of points: The other Champus Fiscal Intermediaries are paying these claims with the same dx., yet they work under the asme fed. guidelines. All the other insurers from this physicans' group are paying. Incidently, how can some of thses claims be deemed elective abortions when there is no fetus noted?

I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions that would help the military women/wives in our region.

Thank you for your time.
