Free Fatty Acids

Dear Doctors,

I have read a study that has related elevated free fatty acid (FFA) levels to Gestational Diabetes Mellitis and Macrosomia. In this study, women with GDM had more than twice the level of FFA than normal women, suggesting that this could be used as an adjunct to diagnosing GDM. The study also suggested that elevated FFA may be partly responsible for increased insulin resistance and reduced capacity of the beta cell to produce insulin.

Have any of you heard of this theory? Do you think it would be beneficial to try to lower FFA levels before or during pregnancy? Am I correct in saying that even women with excellent glucose control may still have a large or macrosomic baby? Perhaps it would decrease the risk of macrosomia.

Thank you for your opinion, or if you don't have an opinion, could you offer this theory up to someone who might? I'm very interested. Thanks again.
