Yes. You should definitely be screened, perhaps at your first prenatal visit and again at the standard 26-28 weeks if that one is negative.

If so could it continue past >the birth?

Yes. Women who experience gestational diabetes are more likely to become diabetic later in life. According to Williams Obstetrics, 50% of women with impaired glucose tolerance in pregancy will develop diabetes. You should be screened regularly.
