Re: Gestational diabetes??From: anonymous@obgyn.netSun, 18 May 1997 16:15:43 -0400 (EDT)

Please help me find the balance here. Any suggestions on how to tactfully bring up these issues with doctors who tend to see us wives as rather brainless would be appreciated as well. Thank you!! -- Pam >> Pam, I had gestational diabetes with my pregnancy as well. While diabetes does run in my family, I was the first to have it during pregnancy, so it came as quite a shock. Unfortunately, I was on daily insulin as well as the restricted diet. As far as your question, please don't worry about the diet. Most doctors will tell you that the American Diabetes Association diet is one of the most healthy diets for anyone. If you already eat fairly healthily, this probably won't be a major change for you and will be more of portion control. The GD diet is based on the ADA diet and the good news is that you will be working with a registered dietician, who will be making sure that you get all the calories you need. The dietician will review your blood sugar test numbers each visit (if you have more than one) and will take them into account when figuring out your diet. It tends to feel restrictive, but you ARE getting what you need. And it seems to be that the fetus takes what it needs first, even at your expense! I hope the doctors on this forum will be able to reassure you about your baby's birthweight...I really don't think this diet should be a cause for alarm. Meanwhile, count yourself as one of the lucky ones who avoided the insulin injections! :-) As for discussing this with your doctors...I think you are already preparing yourself well by gathering the facts and doing a lot of research. As long as you are informed, you can discuss the issues in a positive and educated manner and get the answers you need because you already have the basic knowledge! Best wishes on the remainder of your pregnancy! Darcy Johnson, Co-Moderator, Womens Health Forum
