Another Q. about Gestational Diabetes

I have a question about Gestational Diabetes too. I have two children, both pregnancies seemed "routine" and both children are as normal as any 4 year old and 20 month old can be :-)

I was at my ideal weight with my first pregnancy, but I did carry an extra 25 lbs. into my second pregnancy (though I know that with my son being 4 yrs. I can no longer "blame" it on hime). With my second pregnancy, my 1 hour sugar was high and my 3 hour GTT was borderline. My OB didn't put me on a strict diet, just had me watch it.

Towards the end of my pregnancy, my mother noticed a phlebitis in my leg, and I went to the ER to have it checked. The ER doc kicked into high gear talking about my weight gain and high sugar (weight gain was right on target during the 2nd pregnancy). He wanted to admit me, put me on heparin, bed rest, etc. My OB settled everyone's nerves by sending me home on a short course of baby asprin and told me to take it easy but no bed rest (I believe he said he wanted to increase circulation, so I should move around).

Anyway, as I was leaving, the ER doc told me that borderline sugar will most likely get worse in future pregnancies and odds are I will have gestational diabetes with the next and be at high risk to remain diabetic after pregnancy and/or later in life. Note: my sugar when not pregnant actually runs borderline low.

My husband and I would love to have several more children and are thinking of #3. I AM losing the extra weight first, but the sugar issue concerns me. The ER doc told me that phlebitis can go to a deep thrombosis - directly related to diabetes and if not treated properly can result in loss of limb or death.

My OB/GYN is great and assures me that he does not foresee a problem in future pregnancies, assuring me that each one is different. I've also asked several other M.D.'s in my family and Docs that I have worked for in the past. All tell me not to worry about something that isn't there, but . . . Having two small children, it is a concern. I don't want to be a pest to my doctor, so any feedback on the risks would be welcome.

Thanks,

Holly
