LoriAnn-

It's impossible to say one way or the other whether you will miscarry, but I can reassure you based on the information you provided. First, there are a number of possible causes of spotting during the first trimester *other* than an impending miscarriage. For example, inflammation of the cervix (called cervicitis) is not uncommon in pregnancy, and is probably worsened by the excess blood flow to the female organs, including the cervix. A simple pelvic exam with a speculum can usually identify this problem, which should not lead to a miscarriage. Some infections can cause spotting. Intercourse may cause spotting due to cervical inflammation. A benign polyp of the cervix may cause spotting.

The fact they found a heartbeat is *very* reassuring. Of course, a few women with a fetal heartbeat and spotting will still miscarry, but in general the odds are much better now that they have found a heartbeat, and your chance of miscarrying is much less.

I hope the information from your doctor is equally reassuring, and that you continue to have a safe and healthy pregnancy.

Ashley
