Thank you Kelly ShanahanFrom: Sharon (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 16 May 1997 19:41:53 +0900
Dear Dr Shanahan, Thank you very much for your reply. Sorry I made the mistake about "Premarin", I thought that's what she said it was. I have looked up the Japanese name and I think what I got was "Ethynodiol acetate or Ethinylestradiol" Whatever it was it had 0.5mg of progesterone in it. Yes I do have a very good relationship with her. I am very lucky as most Japanese doctors do not expect their patients to question them farless request a different form of treatment. (Most of my friends here don't know what medicine they are taking, farless it's side effects!) You suggest she asked her colleagues. There are only 2 permanent doctors there, my doctor and her husband, and two doctors still training, who move every year. The system is a little different in Japan than in Britain or the States.. They have never used add-back at the hospital before and she wasn't sure what is was when I first suggested it, but she soon read the articles I gave her and did her own research. You also suggested I refer her to doctors Obgyn.net. Even though we live 5 hours north of Tokyo, (in rice field basically!) and there are only 5 Japanese doctors on the mailing list her husband is one of them!! Though I am not sure if she reads the mail too. Isn't it a small world! I am vegeterian, eating lots of tofu being in Japan, so am not getting bad hot flashes yet, but am worried about the bone density problem. I was very relieved to read your reply and will show it to her. Thank you once again for taking the time to answer. Sharon. P.S. When I read your replies to everyone's questions. I am always moved by how kind and understanding you are. You never talk down to women, but to them. (Which of course many other doctors do too). Then I read the article on you Roberta, I believe, wrote saying you went to Bryn Mawr. It figures. My university, St Andrews, had many JYA students fron Bryn Mawr and I have many friends who went there. They are just like you. I wish there was a university like that in Britain or even better I wish they had a medical school. I want to enter medical school next year and would like to enter a school like Bryn Mawr. Thanks again Sharon.
