Shingles and pregnancyFrom: Mike (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 13 May 1997 22:11:16 -0500 (CDT)
My wife is 37 years old and 11 1/2 weeks into our second pregnancy (we have a healthy two-year-old son). Today she was just diagnosed with shingles. Symptoms started 9 days ago (back pain) and she now has lesions on her back and side (lower abdomen area). She has no history of immune system deficiencies. We're scared. Is shingles likely to endanger the baby's health? If so, is there anything we can do to minimize the chances of any adverse effects of the ilness on the baby? Is shingles something you can just "catch"? Are we worried about nothing? Can you recommend any "drugless" therapies to help my wife feel better through this awful illness? Lastly, are shingles in pregnancy as dangerous as chicken pox? Please help. There seems to be very little info on this topic.
