Getting a baby outFrom: Shawn (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 12 May 1997 02:28:00 -0500 (CDT)
I am due on May 21 and I am seeing both an OB and a midwife. My midwife recommends that I get some almond oil which will be used to lubricate the vaginal opening when the baby is ready to come out. She showed us a video where the top of the baby's head could be seen and the mom was pushing and pushing. My midwife explained that some oil would have helped the woman slip the baby out more easily, but this video was of a hospital birth and so no oil was used. My question is this...why don't doctors in hospitals use oil to lubricate the vaginal opening? It's such a simple thing to do to assist a woman giving birth. I know it's extremely uncomfortable even taking out a tampon when part of it is dry. My OB says almost everyone tears (so they do an episiotomy). My midwife says most of her clients don't tear. Why such a disparity in experience when doctors *and* midwives have both are in the same business of delivering babies??? Thank you for any responses! Shawn
