Fetal Heart ArrhythmiaFrom: Michelle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 9 May 1997 19:50:53 -0500 (CDT)
I am 32 1/2 weeks pregnant and recently found out that my baby's heart rate is arrhythmic and is also below the normal heart rate. An ultrasound and echo revealed no cord compression or structural heart defects. The heart rate fluctuated between 74 and 123 bpm. The slow heart rate may be related to the fact that I also have a slow rate. This was questioned during labor with my 5-year old as well and was determined not to be a problem since my heart rate is also low. Back to the arrhythmia, since no cause can be found at this time, I will be going in once per week for the remainder of my pregnancy to have this monitored and was requested to keep count of fetal movement. The doctor wants to watch for heart failure although he did say that chances of this are very small since in most cases heart failure occurs with an unusually fast heart rate (over 200 bpm). He also said that the arrhythmia may disappear on its own after birth, but that if doesn't, another echo will be done on the baby's heart at that time. My question is, other than cord compression or structural defects, what can cause the arrhythmia? If it is still present after birth, what type of treatment will be done to correct it, if it can be treated?
