Chronic vulvar itchingFrom: susan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 8 May 1997 22:03:49 -0500 (CDT)
There seems to be alot of information on this site about vulvodynia/vulvar vestibulitis. I suffered from chronic vaginal/vulvar itching and burning for four years and endured a variety of creams, surgeries, and misdiagnoses. Finally, I stumbled upon my answer in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology--an apparently not uncommon condition called cytolytic vaginosis, which is caused by an overgrowth of lactobacillus in the vagina. Unfortunately, it is frequently misdiagnosed as a yeast infection. The treatment is simple and can be done easily at home w/o a prescription by performing baking soda douches. The problem does tend to reoccur and sometimes multiple douches are necessary, but this has been a lifesaver for me!! Anyone who has this problem could benefit from reading this article: Cytolytic Vaginosis, Am J Obstet Gynecol, 1991; 165:1245-9
