>Yes I have had an hsg and my tubes are wide open. The gyn. I was seeing Tam- As Dr. Shanahan said, just because the tubes are open does not necessarily mean they are working. The inside of the tubes have cilia just like the throat. Smokers have about a 2 times higher chance of ectopic pregnancies, probably because the cilia inside the tube don't work right and don't move the egg and sperm "forward" towards the uterus. Other things might damage the cilia or other parts of the tube. Laparoscopy basically does what an HSG does, except if you find a problem you might be able to fix it through the 'scope. I suppose a reproductive endocrinologist could do falloscopy, and insert a tiny camera into the fallopian tube, but I have no experience with this and somehow doubt it would help much. As to your other question, I'm sure that there are many cases of PID with tubal damage that can be repaired by tubal surgery. Unfortunately, the evaluation requires either a laparoscopy or laparotomy (usually a bikini cut) to tell the extent of damage. With the fancy new techniques of IVF (in vitro) and other assisted reproductive techniques, I wouldn't doubt it if many RE's would simply offer you one of these techniques instead of tubal surgery. I agree with Dr. Shanahan (as usual), and believe a reproductive endocrinologist is the best choice for your type of problem. Good luck with everything. Ashley
