Hypothyroidism and Other Hormone LevelsFrom: Peggy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 2 May 1997 17:15:42 -0500 (CDT)
After thinking I was pre-menopausal because of my age (45), some menstrual irregularities, mood swings, etc., I was checked (by blood) for FSH (hormone) and TSH (thyroid) levels. Tests showed my FSH was okay, but I was diagnosed as low thyroid or with hypothyroidism. I am now on Synthroid. My question is could my Progesterone levels still be off? Is estrogen dominance (the real cuprit?) interferring with the thyroid hormone? Is just treating the thyroid sufficient, since all of these hormones seem to be interdependent? And just because FSH was okay, could something not be showing up that indicates there is some estrogen dominance going on? Lastly, should I see yet another specialist, an endocrinologist rather than just rely on a gynecologist to straighten out my hormones since they are all interconnected and the thyroid seems to be the main problem? Also are the saliva hormones tests indeed more reliable than blood tests? Please advise. Thank you very much.
