Re: birth control pills and pregnancyFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netTue, 29 Apr 1997 01:19:46 -0400 (EDT)
Hi Nat! As you may have read, many of the doctors who regularly participate in this forum are at the ACOG meeting this week, so an "official" response from one of our Ob-Gyns may take just a little while longer than usual (they ARE checking in via laptop!). So...until you get a more detailed answer from the physicians: It's always best to schedule a pre-conception visit with your Ob-Gyn prior to becoming pregnant. At this point, you can discuss with your physician any questions you may have and get a general check-up to determine your overall health prior to conception. By discontinuing the birth control pills, you will be essentially back to where you were before you took them. Your cycles will most likely return to "irregular" which may make it harder for you to determine the time of ovulation each month, but pregnancy can definitely still happen! Barring any other fertility-type problems, the majority of women will become pregnant within a year. Things that you can do beginning now are to make sure you're in the best shape possible...moderate exercise several times a week and good weight control will help you in the long run. Also, begin taking a multivitamin containing 500 micrograms of Folic acid (most vitamins contain this amount, so you don't need anything special) before trying to conceive. Folic acid helps to prevent neural tube defects, which can occur during the development stage of the embryo BEFORE you know you're pregnant (within the first 40 days), so it's important to get enough of this nutrient very early in your pregnancy! Lastly, relax and enjoy this very special time (and the time spent trying to become pregnant!) and best wishes for a healthy, happy pregnancy! None of them were able to regulate my periods for longer than a few months, which is why I have used several different ones. I want to stop taking them because I would like to get pregnant. What exactly will happen when I stop taking them, and what should I do before trying to get pregnant? >>
