How very true. A (small) number of gynecologists in the past removed uteri without valid indications and the resultant attention to this unfortunate behavior has led to a backlash against women having hysterectomies. Most hysterectomies are "elective" in that they are not performed for life-threatening conditions or for cancer, and the media and certain extremist groups use this label as "evidence" that these hysterectomies are not indicated. Yet, it is the quality of life that matters to most women who consider a hysterectomy. If a patients is apprised of all the options and has discussed the risks of hysterecomy (and the alternative therapies) with her doctor, she will be in a much better position to make a decision regarding this surgery.

If possible, it is always safest to exhaust all possible treatment options before resorting to hysterectomy. Sometimes, however, these other treatments just don't work, and the patient is left with either hysterectomy or a lifetime of discomfort. As one would expect, I have found that the vast majority of my patients undergoing hysterectomy in these situations "never look back" and are absolutely thrilled with the results.
