Nancie- This is probably a benign problem but it's always a good idea to get a good physical exam when you have a nipple discharge and are not nursing. There are a lot of possible causes, including an inflammed duct, hypothyroidism, fibrocystic change of the breasts, medications like "the pill" and certain psychiatric or nausea medications, varicella zoster (shingles), pregnancy, breast feeding, or an almost always small and benign tumor of the brain called a prolactinoma. Your health care provider will want to take a good medical history and will do a thorough physical, including a breast exam. In some cases you will need blood work or other tests to determine the cause. In general, however, it's almost always a straightforward problem. Getting it checked out will help determine the cause and will reassure you. Best of luck, Ashley
