At least 17 studies have evaluated the effect of oestrogen use on stroke risk in women. Most studies adjust the results for the baseline risk factors for stroke such as age, systolic blood pressure, diabetes and smoking. Only the Framingham study reports an increased risk of stroke among postmenopausal oestrogen users. All other research observed either no change or decrease in risk with oestrogen use. The most prominent USA study (Nurses Health Study) found no effect, whereas the European studies find a significant reduction of stroke by 30-50% with the use of oestrogens. Even the combination of oestrogen with progeatagens results in a 33% reduction in risk. Current intake has a better protective effect than past use. For ref, Grady et al.
