Re: DNC-What is it?From: anonymous@obgyn.netTue, 22 Apr 1997 14:16:20 -0400 (EDT)
Hi Dana! I think the term you're looking for is a D&C, which stands for dilation and currettage. This is a procedure in which the cervix is dilated and then the uterus is scraped (or "cleaned")...this can be for new growths or abnormal tissues, or to obtain cell samples, among other things. In terms of abortions, that would be a D&E...dilation and extraction, so the terms are very different. It could be in your grandmother's case that the hysterectomy was an option depending on the D&C, but maybe it was no longer needed. I'm sure the physicians here at the forum will be able to provide more information as to what the procedure is used for, but I wanted to give you some basics to help you! I have no idea what the term is and because she is in Oklahoma and I am in Iowa, I have no way of finding out. I would like more information on the topic. I have been told it has something to do with abortion, but my grandmother is over 70 years old. In addition, I was first told that she was going to have a hysterectomy. I would really like to know more about what a DNC is. >>
