Adrenal HormonesFrom: Mary (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 17 Apr 1997 14:20:58 -0500 (CDT)
I stumbled across your site last night and found it to be very informative. Thanks for creating such a great service for women. My predicament is this: I have had irregular periods since their onset at age 11 (I am currently 33). I have had excessive arm hair since my teenage years. In the past 3 1/2 years (since going off BCPs) the amount of terminal hair has increased on my arms, upper lip, chin & neck area, and from my navel downward. Also noted within this time-frame are loss of scalp hair (noticeable), a deepened voice, excessive weight gain and an average of 2 periods a year. I have been charting my cycles since the beginning of this year. I have had a couple of periods with delayed ovulation and short (9 and 10 day) luteal phases. My Family Practitioner checked my hormone levels in February and my DHEAS level was 4334 mcg/l - considerably higher than the normal ranges for premenopausal women (and higher than the normal ranges for MEN). I was re-checked in March and the number increased to 4807 mcg/l. Since I wish to attempt pregnancy in the near future (with Clomid), my F.P. referred me to my GYN for his impression of the elevated DHEAS. Neither of them seemed overly concerned, however they did mention the possibility of PCOS although I have not had an ultrasound scan of my ovaries for confirmation. I have spent countless hours both on the Net and in the library doing my own research and I am concerned about the many instances where I read that androgen levels in women that are higher than the normal male ranges indicate serious disease. My goal is to get as healthy as possible before becoming pregnant. I have already lost 48 pounds through healthier diet and daily exercise! My questions: 1) Do DHEAS levels such as mine warrant an evaluation by an endocrinologist? 2) Does Clomid help or hinder a luteal phase defect? Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for allowing me to ramble on.
