Fertile or Infertile?

I have been off the pill for just over a year (since March 1, 1996) and actively trying to get pregnant since about last May/June. My periods were irregular after going off the pill, even though they had been like clock work before the pill (I went on the pill at 19 and am now 29).

Since last March, my period intervals were 6 weeks, 6 weeks, 7 weeks, 6.5 weeks, 5 weeks, 5 weeks, then finally 4 weeks (that was December 1st). I haven't had my period since. My sister had suggested to me that perhaps I was not ovulating. Anyhow, I went to see my OB/GYN in September, and she did a mucus test that did not show the tell-tale "fern" pattern, so she thought perhaps I was ovulating and to wait and give my body a bit more time to kick in after being on the pill. When my cycles got more normal in the fall, I thought she was right--until I didn't get my period at all. In January I had a prolactin & thyroid test that came back normal. I kept waiting.

Finally last month (March), I called my OB/GYN again. She mentioned chlomid, but said the first step was to take provera and determine if I got my period. If I did, she thought we should give it a few more months before proceeding. I took the provera and got my period, so she recommended I wait and chart my temperature for a few months to see if there was any increase (I had done this before and seen no mentionable increase). I'm going into all this detail b/c I'm confused--I don't want to be an alarmist and turn to chlomid if perhaps there are other options; however, I don't know how long to wait to judge that things are "normal" or "abnormal". I'm also not sure of the questions I should be asking my OB/GYN. Any knowledgeable advice is welcome, and sorry for the long email.
