cystic teratomasFrom: Cherae (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 8 Apr 1997 14:24:29 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Forum- I have been doing some research on teratoma tumors of the ovary and on twins (two different reseach projects) and I have come across a book that says that the teratoma tumors that some people get are caused by the injesting of the second twin. Is this just a strange interpretation or is there some truth to it? Here is a section of the research I have come up with. "There are several theories regarding the histogenesis of teratoma formation. Ahfeld first proposed the included twin theory in the late 1800's. Schwalbe later suggested that teratomas arise, during embryogenesis, from displaced germ cells during migration to the genital ridge. The most popular theory speculates that teratomas arise from totipotential embryonic tissues that are somehow displaced during ontogeny. For head and neck teratomas, the theory postulates that embryonic tissue in proximity to the primitive streak and notochord somehow loses its governing influence over the totipotential cells, allowing unorganized differentiation. This is presumably due to alterations in cellular membrane chemistry." Thanks for your time, Sincerely
