Premature or early menopause is defined as the cessation of spontaneous menstruation for over 1 year before the age of 40. There are a number of reasons for periods to stop, but true menopause only occurs when the ovaries run out of eggs. Sometimes even blood testing will make it look as if there are no more healthy aggs around. If you are over 40, menopause would not be considered premature. Are you having symptoms of menopause? Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, difficulty sleeping? If not, it may be possible that your hormone levels are still at a low point and that's why you did not bleed after Provera. If there are still healthy eggs in the ovaries, eventually the pituitary would jumpstart them to begin functioning again. The pituitary may be having trouble doing that if your prolactin levels are elevated. Your physician may consider investigating the reasons for your persistant prolactin elevation since they should be back to normal by now.
