Laura- Dr. Hill answered this question a few days ago. You must have missed it..Thank you for your interest in the Womens Health Forum.

Answer from Dr. Hill as follows:

A sonohysterogram is an office procedure where your doctor places a tiny catheter through your cervix and into your uterus in order to infuse a small amount of sterile water into the uterus. This expands the uterus and allows him or her to visualize the inside of the uterus (usually using a vaginal sonogram). This is almost always painless, or at most minimally uncomfortable (like a period cramp) and is very useful for determining if their are little polyps or fibroids inside the uterus. These can cause persistent bleeding, and may be a cause of miscarriage or infertility (in some cases).

You may want to ask your doctor about taking 3 or 4 200mg ibuprofen tablets (i.e. advil) about an hour prior to the procedure, which I find decreases any possible cramping.
