I hope this answers your question..

Ultrsound is a non-evasive, (no pain), way for a radiologist to determine if a lump or mass is solid or a fluid- filled cyst.

A gel is rubbed on the area and a small transducer (wand like) is slid along the skin, sending waves through it. If something gets in the way of the waves, they bounce back again, and if nothing gets in the way they pass through. It helps determine whether a lump is fluid-filled or solid- if it's fluid-filled like a cyst, the sound waves go through it, if it's solid like a fibroadenoma, pseudolump or cancerous lump, the sound waves bounce back. The radiologist views this on a screen.
