Post-myomectomy questionFrom: Debbie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 25 Mar 1997 10:22:55 -0600 (CST)
I am 28 and had a large fibroid removed 2 weeks ago via hysteroscopy. My RE had to leave 10% of it behind (near the cervix) to preserve my uterus for child bearing. The pathology report came back saying there was more cell activity than should be for a fibroid. The OB/GYN pathologist said that it wasn't necessary to have the rest of the tumor removed at this time - just "keep an eye on it." I have heard that fibroids are rarely cancerous, and the ones that are usually are fast-growing. I have also heard that if a fibroid responds well to Lupron it's less apt to be cancerous. My Dr. said my fibroid was very old (15 yrs - not fast growing) and 3 months of Lupron shrunk it 50%. So my questions are regarding the cell activity - what procedure is used to "keep an eye on it", and what are the odds that this will turn into a cancerous tumor?
