Cindy, I've seen post partum depression affect the most normal of women. It can be a devastating condition if not addressed properly. If you have any thoughts of hurting yourself or your child you must immediately seek psychiatric help. Zoloft or Paxil or Prozac or any of this type of medication can be quite effective within two to four weeks of starting therapy...but before that, if the medication is not working and you feel your condition is worsening you need to notify your physician. There are other medications and other strategies that might be necessary during this critical period of time. But remember your brain is just a chemical factory and depression may simply be the result of a chemical imbalance. Sometimes old experiences can contribute to postpartum depression and that's where psychiatric care may benefit you. There may also be some family predisposition to this condition. But please don't hesitate to seek more help if you feel you are getting nowhere. hang in there!
