Bromocriptine, Dopamine, and Raging Emotions

Can anyone explain exactly what bromocriptine does. I am taking it for a prolacin-secreting pituitary adenoma, and I am trying to figure out why I have been on such an emotional rollercoaster since I started taking it. I also seem to be experiencing memory problems, which I also attribute to the bromocriptine. I understand that bromocriptine is a dopamine agonist. What exactly is dopamine? What does it affect, besides the secretion of prolactin, and what is it affected by? I keep reading that dopamine is involved in emotional expression and cognition, but nothing I have found explains how. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
