I don't usually recommend this book for things, but I know there is a one-page discussion on what to do in an emergency unattended birth situation in "What to Expect When You're Execting". I would also read other labor and birth books to see how they address the issue. However, I liked the idea of interviewing a firefighter and you may find that also interviewing an EMT (firefighter or not) may help you. And of course, there's always a medical school library or (perhaps?) MedLine.
