MENOPAUSE: Postmenopausal Bleeding: Related to recent dieting and weight loss? From: Over50WhiteWoman (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 19 Jul 2009 00:35:30 -0500 (CDT)
Stats: I am 57 with 5 grown children, had 8 pregnancies, and was treated for HPV about 15 years ago with laser surgery. I took BC pill in 1984 for about a year. No hormones since then. My last real period was at least 3 years ago, my last PAP test was 3.5 years ago, and I haven't had sex since then. Last September I decided my 165 lbs were too much. By March I had lost about 30 lbs (now 40!), intentionally. For several months I exercised almost daily for about 45 min/day. On Feb 23 I noticed a bloody spot on my underwear (bright red blood), and on bathroom tissue. That was all. In March I started planting rose bushes on March 18 and 19, for a couple of hours, digging, hauling dirt, etc. That evening (March 19), I felt real menstrual cramps for at least an hour or so. The next day I found the spots in my underwear again. It lasted for several hours, but very tiny amount. I called the Dr. The following Monday I had a PAP test, which came back negative 2 weeks later. On April 10, the spots returned (only for an hour or two this time). On April 17, I had an ultrasound, resulting with 6.41 mm thickness measurement of the endometrium. (Normal is 0-5 mm.) Dr. tried to but could not complete a biopsy due to cervical abnormalities or scar tissue or something (previous cone biopsy). She told me to come back when the bleeding starts again, so she could evaluate. I went back to my primary care Dr. and she said wait and repeat the ultrasound in 6 months. The bleeding has not returned. I have stopped daily exercising, and weight loss has slowed some. Should I be satisfied with waiting? Could my spotting just be the result of 'freeing up' the latent estrogen stored in my fat cells when I lost weight, which may have caused the spotting? Wouldn't endometrial cancer CONTINUE to cause spotting? It's now been over 3 months. Oh, one other thing I wondered about. About 1 month before the first incident I started taking vitamins with 'phytosterols' (800mg) to lower cholesterol. I have always been sensitive to soybean estrogens in those menopause supplements, so I just wondered. . .anyway--Should I be doing anything right now, or is it safe to just wait. I don't have health insurance and want this settled.
