VULVARPAIN: lichen sclerosusFrom: Michelle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 25 Jun 2009 21:09:28 -0500 (CDT)
I am a 40 yr old woman and have been experiencing severe vaginal dryness and itching for the past two years. My gyn diagnosed vaginal atrophy and I have been treated with Premarin and Estrace cream as well as an Estring for 6 months. We have even combined the Estring with the Estrace to no avail. I have a couple of good weeks each month where I feel perfectly normal and do not even need additional lubrication for sex. Then the itching/burning starts and even walking is painful. I have a watery discharge w/out odor during this time and it burns on contact with my skin. I went last week to my gyn during one of these itching episodes and she did a vulvar biopsy (not fun) and said she thinks it may be lichen sclerosus. I don't have any of the tell-tale signs of it though; just the itching. She prescribed Temovate ointment while we wait on the biopsy results. I have used it for four days and the itching and burning are much worse than before I started it. Why would this happen? I am so frustrated by all of this and getting very depressed as well. What else could be causing my problems and should I be referred at this point to a specialist? I love my doctor but am getting desperate. Where do I go from here?
