PERIMENOPAUSE/CYST: perimenopause questionsFrom: KellyJean (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 25 Jun 2009 08:25:31 -0500 (CDT)
I am 41, have some fibroids and a complex ovarian cyst. My periods are getting much lighter (down to 1-2 pads a day for about 4-5 days). They used to be heavy enough to require 5 pads a day for seven days. They always came at 28 days, but during the past 2 and a half years have been coming anywhere between 21 and 29 days. I no longer know for sure when my cycle is coming and have had a few unexpected surprises. I am getting hot flashes and cold flashes both during the day and night. I am also having issues with being much more emotional and cry over things I never cried about before. My energy levels are not what they used to be. I have lost 20 pounds between mid April and early June ( but the periods were already changing before the weight loss). I am trying to lose another 20. I try to walk 5 miles a day. My doctor had me get a thyroid test, which came back in the normal range. I am wondering 1) if I am in peri-menopause. My mom hit meno at 47/48, had two children and skipped a lot of periods in her 30's due to being underweight, and used an IUD. I have never missed a period, and have no children, and have not used hormonal birth control. 2) Does the cyst on my ovary cause it not to work? When the cyst is removed, is there anyway to know if the bleeding will increase, decrease or stay about the same? I know the cyst has been there for at least a year, but it is possible that it has been there much longer. 3) How can I handle the crying jags? I can deal with being hot and cold, but the sudden fits of tears concern me. Since I have fibroids, I am concerned about increasing estrogen loads and have been limiting meat, trying to stick to hormone free meat, limiting milk to just that needed for a bowl of cereal, and using milk that is RBST free. Also, trying to use organic fruit to avoid pesticides. I have eliminated pop- both diet and regular, have never had coffee, and pretty much stick to just drinking water. I avoid fast food, and try to keep my fiber intake around 25-30 grams a day. Thanks, Kelly
